DateTime using DateDiff

Hello everyone.

Im currently using the DateDiff function to filter my DateTime columns but am finding it somewhat troublesome. Currently I am having to write the same select statement 3 times if I want to filter by month, year or all (ignoring dates).

To find @.PurchaseTotal for the year, I have to write the following:

SELECT
 @.PurchaseTotal = Sum(PurchaseTotal)
FROM
_Expenses
WHERE
 DateDiff(yyyy, DateOf, @.IntervalDate) = @.Interval

To find @.PurchaseTotal for a month, I have to write the following:

SELECT
 @.PurchaseTotal = Sum(PurchaseTotal)
FROM
_Expenses
WHERE
 DateDiff(mm, DateOf, @.IntervalDate) = @.Interval

To find @.PurchaseTotal for all the records, I have to write the following:

SELECT
 @.PurchaseTotal = Sum(PurchaseTotal)
FROM
_Expenses

I've tried the following code but I get an error.

DateDiff(@.DateParameter, DateOf, @.IntervalDate) = @.Interval

Error says something like "incorrect parameter 1 for DateDiff."

It seems you have to write a different select statement for month, day and year. Also If you want a total from all the records you have to write yet another select statement.

Does anyone know of a DateTime function that allows parameters to specify for month, day and Year? Also does anyone know of a DateTime function that works like the COALESCE function to where you can send it a NULL value and give you all the records?

::WHERE DateDiff(mm, DateOf, @.IntervalDate) = @.Interval

Means, in SQL Server language: DO NOT USE AN INDEX.

Why do you not go the easy way?

::WHERE DateOf BETWEEN @.StartDate and @.EndDate

which is WAY less processing for SQL Server, allows it to use an index and in general is faster?

DateTime parameter in report

Hi All:

I wanna have DateTime calendar filter in report, so i create a parameter call EndDate which defualt vavlue today, now i have problem how can i get the value from Date Time calendar after every time user selected new date, then i need to pass this date time value to subreport.

Not sure I understand your request well. Are you asking how to pass a parameter value from a main report to a subreport? You may want to read the following BOL page: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa337167.aspx. In particular, you can pass parameter values to subreports by editing the subreport properties in the main report and setting the parameter expression to =Parameters!EndDate.Value

Thanks for your reply, now i got another error after i set up the date time parameter in subreports.

In the property of sub report , i use =Parameters!WeekEnding.Value, weekEnding is date time type parameter both in main and sub report.

now i run the report. i got error like below:

An error occured during local report processing. The value provided for the report parameter "WeekEnding" is not valid for it's type.

I have no ideas about this error message. it works fine if i change WeekEnding type to string both in main and sub report. is that anything i missing out here?

Datetime Filter

For one of the tables on my report i need to allow only the records where a
certain datetime field has Null value. I have not been able to figure out the
expression in the filter that would do this.
Any ideas?
I cannot do this in the select statement as other data regions require
records with values in the same field.You can do a filter at the table level (the Table report object, that is) or
at the list level by high-lighting the Table or List (for instance) and
selecting the filters from the Properties menu and placing a filter on the
data in the object. Hope this helps.

What I am having trouble with is the expression to use in the filter. I get
the feeling that it does not like to handle Nulls.

you tried the following in your filter?
set Expression to your date/time field
set Operator to "="
set Value to "= Nothing"
This is assuming you do not also need to include a date spread for when the
field does have a value. If so, let me know. I have that figured out as
well.
